The Stochastic Gravitational–wave Background Produced by Non–linear Cosmological Perturbations

چکیده
The cosmological stochastic gravitational-wave background produced by the mildly non-linear evolution of density fluctuations is analyzed, in the frame of an Einstein-de Sitter model, by means of a fully relativistic perturbation expansion up to second order. The form of these gravitational-instability-induced gravitational waves is gaugedependent. In the synchronous gauge, where the second-order expansion is most easily carried out, the transverse and traceless tensor modes which are produced also contain a Newtonian and post-Newtonian piece, whose interpretation as gravitational waves is non-trivial. A more direct physical understanding of this background is obtained in the so-called Poisson gauge, where it is seen to consist of a constant term plus an oscillating piece whose amplitude decays inside the Hubble radius.

متن کاملStochastic gravitational wave background from cold dark matter halos
The current knowledge of cosmological structure formation suggests that Cold Dark Matter (CDM) halos possess a non-spherical density profile, implying that cosmic structures can be potential sources of gravitational waves via power transfer from scalar perturbations to tensor metric modes in the non-linear regime. By means of a previously developed mathematical formalism and a triaxial collapse...

We study the evolution of cosmological perturbations, using a hybrid approximation scheme which upgrades the weak-field limit of Einstein’s field equations to account for post-Newtonian scalar and vector metric perturbations and for leading-order source terms of gravitational waves, while including also the first and second-order perturbative approximations. Our equations, which are derived in ...

Stochastic gravitational wave background produced by a stationary coalescing population of binary neutron stars in the Galaxy is calculated. This background is found to constitute a confusion limit within the LISA frequency band up to a limiting frequency νlim ∼ 10 −3 Hz, leaving the frequency window ∼ 10–10 Hz open for the potential detection of cosmological stochastic gravitational waves and ...
